The Advent of Self-Service
At the risk of dating myself, I can remember when the fast-food franchises took off. They had already been around for a few decades, but the downturn in the world economy coupled with the lack of time most families had to prepare meals, meant more people were turning to the convenience of fast-food restaurants.
Just as dramatic as the initial explosion of fast-food franchises is what is happening in the fast food industry today with the advent of self-service. Due to economic factors, fast-food chains are now implementing self-service kiosks for their customers. At these kiosks, patrons can order their meals from a large touch-screen (including the options to personalize their choices), use the mode of payment they desire, then wait for their order to be fulfilled. However, it is essential to note that this shift to self-service in the fast food industry was made possible by the growing familiarity with technology by non-technical users.

But one of the significant shifts recently is a move toward Self-Service for the line of business audience. This change allows non-technical users to access the information they need, from any business-critical source, and visualize it in an easy-to-understand view.
